Martedì 1° agosto il Portogallo ha chiuso la sua partecipazione ai Mondiali dopo aver pareggiato 0-0 contro gli Stati Uniti, due volte campioni del mondo.
All’Eden Park, in Nuova Zelanda, “come Navegadoras” aveva bisogno di battere gli americani per continuare a vivere il sogno e sono entrati in partita bene, senza paura e con tanta voglia di continuare a sognare.
È stata una partita molto ben combattuta, dove i due volte campioni del mondo hanno avuto molta difficoltà a creare occasioni di grande pericolo. La pressione esercitata dalla nazionale portoghese ha impedito alle americane di fare la loro partita, provocando loro un certo nervosismo.
Dopo un primo tempo in cui la nazionale portoghese ha avuto più possesso palla. Il secondo tempo è iniziato con gli Stati Uniti che pressano di più e provano a segnare. Tuttavia, il Portogallo è tornato indietro, il che ha finito per complicare il gioco per gli americani.
Dopo 91 minuti, Ana Capeta ha avuto la migliore occasione dell’intera partita con un tiro fortissimo che è finito per essere fermato dal palo.
Con questo risultato il Portogallo, alla sua prima partecipazione, chiude terzo nel girone E, con quattro punti, dove ha vinto l’Olanda e secondo gli Stati Uniti, ultimi e con zero punti, il Vietnam, al debutto nella competizione.
