L’H&D Chievo Women continua la sua inarrestabile marcia nei piani alti della Serie B. Infatti, la formazione allenata da Giacomo Venturi ha sconfitto in trasferta il Cesena per 1-0, e ora le clivensi balzano al terzo posto del torneo cadetto insieme alla Ternana e al Cittadella Women. A decidere la partita è stata la prima rete in gialloblù di Kailey Willis, attaccante maltese classe ’03 che, questa stagione, ha scelto di andare al Chievo dopo l’esperienza vissuta sempre a Verona con l’Hellas. La nostra Redazione ha raggiunto Kailey per risponderci ad alcune domande.
Kailey in che modo il pallone è diventato il tuo migliore amico?
«Fin da bambina mi è sempre piaciuto lo sport. Inizialmente ho iniziato a giocare tennis, poi spinta da mio papà che ha sempre adorato il calcio, ho iniziato a fare qualche allenamento e da lì in poi è diventato qualcosa senza cui non posso stare».
Quando hai capito che saresti diventata un’attaccante?
«Dai primi anni ho sempre fatto l’attaccante, sia esterna che centrale, mi è sempre piaciuta la sensazione di quando fai gol più che salvarne uno, quindi da li ho sempre fatto parte della linea offensiva».
Qual è la tua giocatrice di riferimento?
«In squadra la giocatrice di riferimento è Claudia, mi aiuta tanto nella quotidianità di ogni allenamento. Poi mi piace come stile di gioco Samantha Kerr, giocatrice del Chelsea».
Cosa ti ha portato ad indossare quest’anno la divisa dell’H&D Chievo Women?
«L’anno scorso guardavo spesso le partite del Chievo e ho sempre pensato fosse una squadra molto organizzata e forte. Per questo motivo non mi sono fatta scappare l’opportunità di vestire questa maglia».
Come ti sei approcciata con la tua nuova squadra?
«L’approccio è stato facile, le ragazze sono fantastiche sempre pronte ad aiutarti nel momento del bisogno e come gruppo siamo molto unite».
Il girone di andata di Serie B è andato in porto, e il Chievo è sul podio. Ti aspettavi di vedere la squadra in questa posizione?
«Dall’inizio avevo capito che fossimo una squadra con potenzialità e ho creduto che potessimo fare belle cose insieme, quindi posso dire di sì, avevo delle aspettative molto alte per noi».
Un piazzamento centrato grazie al successo di domenica contro il Cesena. In che modo sono arrivati, secondo te, questi tre punti?
«Questi tre punti sicuramente non sono arrivati a caso o per fortuna, ma sono arrivati con il duro lavoro, sacrificio e perseveranza, facendolo tutti insieme».
Il match che hai giocato contro il Cesena ha una valenza importante per te, dato che hai segnato la rete decisiva. Che emozioni hai provato a segnare il tuo primo gol con la maglia del Chievo?
«Sono dei momenti ed emozioni che non puoi descriverli, ma sicuramente è stato indimenticabile».
Adesso inizia il ritorno e il Chievo ospiterà un’Apulia Trani a caccia di punti per la salvezza. Cosa dovrà fare attenzione la squadra nei confronti dell’avversario?
«Noi dobbiamo continuare a fare il nostro gioco preparando una partita alla volta come abbiamo fatto fino ad ora».
Che Serie B hai notato dopo quindici gare di campionato? Chi può vincere secondo te il torneo?
«É un campionato molto competitivo, come abbiamo visto. Detto questo io credo nella potenzialità della squadra e credo che possiamo arrivare noi in cima alla classifica».
Restando in B c’è l’Hellas Verona Women, squadra che nella scorsa stagione ti ha lanciato nel calcio femminile italiano. Che effetto ha fatto per te incrociare la tua ex formazione?
«Mi ha fatto molto piacere incontrare di nuovo persone con cui ho passato dei momenti speciali nella mia carriera calcistica. Sono stati bei momenti che ricorderò».
Sono due anni che sei nel nostro calcio. Che differenze hai notato tra il mondo calcistico italiano e quello di Malta, tua nazione nativa?
«Il livello tecnico tattico del calcio femminile a Malta e inferiore rispetto all’Italia. Nonostante questo, anche grazie all’inserimento di coach italiani, stiamo crescendo e migliorando di anno in anno».
Com’è la tua vita extracalcistica?
«È una vita normale. Mi piace stare con gli amici e dedicare allo stesso tempo dello spazio per me stessa. Qui a Verona mi trovo molto bene, la città è bellissima e le persone riescono a farmi sentire a casa».
Quali sono i tuoi buoni propositi per il 2023?
«Allenarmi per migliorare ogni giorno di più. Sto investendo molto su me stessa, è un anno importante, di transizione. Spero di avere spazio per poter giocare e aiutare la squadra, magari facendo altri gol».

Kaley how did the ball become your best friend?
«Since I was a child, i have always liked sports. Initially I started playing tennis, then pushed by my dad who has always loved football, I started doing some training and from then on it became something I can’t live without».
When did you realize that you would become a striker?
«From the early years I’ve always been a forward, both winger and centre-back, I’ve always liked the feeling of when you score goals rather than saving one, so I’ve always been part of the offensive line since then».
Who is your reference player?
«In the team the reference player is Claudia, she helps me a lot in the daily life of each training session. Then i like Samantha Kerr’s style of play, a Chelsea player».
What made you wear the H&D Chievo Women’s uniform this year?

How did you approach your new team?
«They are moments and emotions that you cannot describe but it was certainly unforgettable».
The first round of Serie B has gone through, and Chievo is on the podium. Did you expect to see the team in this position?
«From the beginning I understood that we were a team with potential, and I believed that we could do good things together, so I can say yes, I had very high expectations for us».
A placement that arrived thanks at the success that arrived on Sunday against Cesena. In your opinion, how did these three points arrive?

The match you played against Cesena has an important value for you, given that you scored the decisive goal. What emotions did you feel when you scored your first goal in a Chievo shirt?

Now the return begins and Chievo will host an Apulia Trani looking for points for salvation. What will the team have to pay attention to against the opponent?
«We must continue to play our game by preparing one game at a time as we have done up to now».
What Serie B have you noticed after fifteen league games? Who do you think can win the tournament?
«It is a very competitive championship, as we have seen. Having said that, i believe in the potential of the team, and i believe that we can reach the top of the table».
Staying in B there is Hellas Verona Women, a team that launched you into Italian women’s football last season. What effect did crossing your former background have on you?
«I was very pleased to meet again people with whom I spent special moments in my football career. They were good moments that I will remember».
You’ve been in our football for two years. What differences have you noticed between the Italian football world and that of your native country Malta?
«The technical-tactical level of women’s football in Malta is lower than in Italy. Despite this, also thanks to the inclusion of Italian coaches, we are growing and improving year after year».
How is your life outside football?
«It’s a normal life. I like being with friends and at the same time dedicating space to myself. Here in Verona I feel very comfortable, the city is beautiful and the people manage to make me feel at home».
What are your resolutions for 2023?
«Training to get better every day. I’m investing a lot in myself, it’s an important year of transition. I hope I have space to play and help the team by scoring more goals».
