Il calcio femminile maltese sembra aver trovato la sua stella. Haley Bugeja ha portato una luce folgorante sul movimento maltese del calcio femminile. Noi di Calcio Femminile Italiano abbiamo avuto il piacere e l’onore di intervistare il commissario tecnico della nazionale femminile di Malta Mark Gatt. Queste le sue parole.
Haley è solo la punta dell’iceberg di un movimento giovanile in rapida crescita. Qual è la forza del vostro settore giovanile?
“Siamo molto soddisfatti dei progressi delle nostre giovani giocatrici e del nostro assetto nel suo complesso. Vedere il numero di giovani giocatrici che fanno parte della nostra squadra senior dimostra che stiamo lavorando nella giusta direzione. Il nostro obiettivo principale è far migliorare le nostre giocatrici e motivarle a uscire dalle loro zone di comfort. Anche la Scuola Nazionale di Sport ha svolto il suo ruolo in quanto le migliori giovani giocatrici si allenano e giocano con i migliori ragazzi della loro fascia d’età. Inoltre, il modo in cui la nostra nazionale senior è organizzata con così tante giovani giocatrici rende più facile per loro sentirsi le benvenute quando si uniscono alla squadra senior.”
Molti giocatori maltesi sono venuti a giocare nel campionato italiano come Shona Zammit e Nicole Sciberras. Cosa rappresenta per loro l’Italia?
“L’Italia è un paese vicino e il calcio italiano è seguito da vicino dai maltesi. Abbiamo giocatori in altri paesi come Regno Unito e Belgio. La cultura italiana è molto simile alla nostra, quindi per le nostre ragazze è più facile stabilirsi con la breve distanza che è un ulteriore vantaggio.”
Nell’ultimo turno la nazionale maltese ha ottenuto la prima vittoria nelle qualificazioni europee. Quali erano i sentimenti al riguardo?
“La nostra squadra si è comportata bene nelle partite internazionali nelle fasi di pre-qualificazione, nei tornei amichevoli e nelle partite internazionali, quindi non è stata una sorpresa. Tuttavia, ottenere la prima vittoria in una competizione ufficiale è sempre molto soddisfacente e gratificante. Non vediamo l’ora di mostrare un calcio più propositivo, soprattutto contro le squadre di metà classifica nel nostro gruppo.”
Quali sono i futuri obiettivi del movimento calcistico femminile maltese?
“I nostri obiettivi sono chiari. Siamo disposti e motivati a continuare ad imparare collettivamente da ogni partita e assicurarci di ottenere il meglio dalle nostre giocatrici, sottolineando l’importanza di continuare a investire nelle nostre interpreti con l’ausilio delle accademie. Anche se siamo un piccolo Paese, crediamo fermamente che dovremmo continuare a puntare in alto e ottenere il rispetto che questa squadra merita veramente. Con così tante giovani giocatrici in rosa, il futuro sembra roseo.”
Impossibile non parlarne: Haley Bugeja. Con due gol fenomenali nell’ultima giornata di Serie A, il trequartista maltese è finita sotto i riflettori dei media. Cosa ne pensi di questa giocatrice?
“Il fatto che Haley sia stata convocata nella squadra maggiore in tenera età la dice lunga sul suo talento. È impossibile perdere un talento del genere. Quello che ha fatto nella sua prima partita con il Sassuolo è stato fantastico, ma non è stata una sorpresa per coloro che hanno lavorato con lei a livello locale. Non potevo schierarla per la squadra nazionale fino a quando non fosse stata eleggibile, per età, ma sono stato molto attento a come introdurla in squadra, darle la giusta esperienza e trovare l’equilibrio per non bruciarla in presto. Ha il potenziale per inseguire tutti i suoi sogni.”

Haley is just the tip of the iceberg of a rapidly growing junior movement. What is the strength of your youth sector?
“We are very pleased with the progress of our young players and our set-up as a whole. Seeing the number of young players forming part of our senior team shows that we are working in the right direction. Our top objective is to improve our players and motivate them to move out of their comfort zones. The National Sport School has played its role too as the best young female players get to train and play with the top boys in their age-group. Also, the way our senior national team is set up with so many young players makes it easier for them to feel welcome when joining the senior side.”
Many Maltese players have come to play in the Italian league like Shona Zammit and Nicole Sciberras. What does Italy represent for them?
“Italy is a neighbouring country and Italian football is closely followed by the Maltese. We have players in other countries such as the UK and Belgium. The Italian culture is very similar to ours, thus making it easier for our girls to settle while the short distance is also a plus.”
In the last round your national team got their first victory in the European qualifiers. What were the feelings about it?
“Our team has been doing well in international games in pre-qualifier stages, international friendly tournaments and matches, so it came to no surprise. However, obtaining the first win in an official competition is always very satisfactory and rewarding. We look forward to displaying more positive football, especially against mid-table teams in our group.”
In a few days the Danish national team will arrive in Malta. How did you prepare for this match? And how will you face the Scandinavians?
“Playing against such top teams is always a huge challenge for us and we use these games to gain all the experience we can. We respect our opponents but we will play without fear, which is a very important factor for us and something that was not an easy factor to instill in our girls. We have started training one week before the game but with quite a few players playing abroad, we will only have the whole squad together only a few days before the game which makes it somewhat difficult to prepare.”
What are the future objectives of the Maltese women’s football movement?
“Our objectives are clear. We are willing and motivated to keep on learning collectively from every game and make sure we get the very best of our players while emphasising the importance to keep investing in our players in our academies. Even though we are a small country, we firmly believe that we should keep aiming higher and gain the respect this team truly deserves. With so many young players in the squad the future looks bright.”
Impossible not to mention it: Haley Bugeja. With two phenomenal goals on the last matchday of Serie A, the Maltese attacking midfielder ended up in the media spotlight. What are your thoughts on this player?
“The fact that Haley was called up to the senior squad at a very young age says everything about her talent. It is impossible to miss such a talent. What she has done in her first game with Sassuolo was amazing but it came as no surprise to those who have been working with her locally. I could not field her for the national team until she was eligible, age-wise, but was very careful on how to introduce her into the squad, give her the right experience and finding the balance not to burn her out at such a tender age. She has the potential to follow all her dreams.”
